“I believe that life experiences are just as important, if not more so, than an education in how to put words down on paper. I have always welcomed personal growth. It’s the only way to reach your dreams, to expect nothing but the best from yourself.”

“I think women are designed with such strength and we don’t realize it until we are put to the test. The tenacity with which we plough forward is remarkable, even to us...but that’s what makes us so complex.”

“Remember, with all of these strong women, we will be able to accomplish anything. Support, encouragement and testimony are key to achieving what we want to accomplish.”

“There will always be skeptics and there will always be opinionated people, but to do what you truly believe in, is an accomplishment which very few people can actually take ownership of.”

“I truly believe that when women band together they can encourage and give strength to each other in any situation. I believe women are so open about their feelings and genuine that they become this instant relatable bond for one another.
God gave us great strength and when faced with a challenge we can always rise to the top especially when we unite.”

While wandering the First Chance Craft Fair in Sidney this past November, I stumbled upon a true gem of an Island Gal, who also happens to create jewelry as well as wall art.

But not the kind of mass produced, cookie cutter jewelry you’ll find at any local mall. These are true pieces of original, hand crafted art.

I found myself staring at each individual piece, so impressed by the quality and uniqueness of each. I then looked up to see the creator of these artistic statements; Joyce Bezusko, a petite bundle of energy and spirit.

Amid the crowd of holiday shoppers hovering around Joyce’s table, we managed to strike up a brief conversation. That conversation led to an exchange of email addresses, and a hurried, ‘we really should get together soon!’

Well we made good on our promise to ‘keep in touch’, and a few weeks later, with Joyce’s generous invitation to her home for coffee, I found myself driving up to Parksville to meet with this woman I found so warm, engaging, and spirited.

Our initial purpose for meeting was for me to learn more about Joyce’s passion for jewelry design, a little about herself, and an outcome of an interesting article for this magazine.

For over two hours we did what most women do when they get together for coffee, we chatted about everything and more. With no topic left untouched, we covered family stories, Joyce’s Italian background and my Polish one, our common need to emphasize our conversations with the use of bold hand gestures, and everything in between.

Joyce shared with me her true goal and intent in her strive to create a successful business with her talent and flair for beautiful creations.

Two hours later I drove home with renewed inspiration, and a new friend.

Joyce’s spirit is infectious. Her words of motivation are real. Her convictions are fierce and undaunting.

In the last few months of email correspondence with Joyce, she has given me more support with her casual ‘words of wisdom’, then I could ever get from watching YouTube

Along with showcasing more of her beautiful creations in upcoming issues, Joyce will do for our readers what she did for me over coffee chat; renew our spirits, inspire us with her own challenges and triumphs, and bring us along in her journey of exploration into how women’s subtle power and determination can overcome even the most difficult of obstacles.
